School Visits
I love to visit schools and libraries, to read and speak to children!
Audience: I visit middle and high schools. Mr. Touchdown, which is about the desegregation of a Southern high school in 1965, is best for middle and high school students studying the Civil Rights era. Peace I Ask of Thee, Oh River, which addresses bullying at a girls' summer camp, is appropriate for high school students. I am happy to speak with all students about the writing and publishing process as well as careers in journalism.
Program: My program can be adapted to your school and students. Depending on the age and interests of your students, I can include a book-reading, PowerPoint presentation on my personal experiences growing up in the segregated South, and answer questions about my books, the Civil Rights era, and about the writing process, how a book becomes a book, and how to make a living as a writer.
Fee: To support my school visit program, I do ask for an honorarium ($100 for half-day local and regional visits within 100 miles of Washington, D.C., $200 for more distant visits). With prior agreement, however, in some cases the cost to the school can be offset with book sales (see below). I do not ask schools to pay my travel expenses over and above the honorarium.
Visit schedule: For a half-school-day visit, I can present to two or three groups of students; for a full-day visit (which would require an additional $50 (local) and $100 (distant) honorarium, I can visit with up to five groups. I leave the details of scheduling to your school; I am happy to structure the visit in whatever way works best for you.
Book sales: I ask that schools offer my book for sale to students. About six weeks prior to the visit, I will supply order forms for distribution to students; please return all prepaid orders to me no later than three weeks in advance of the visit. Although purchase of books by students is always optional, if the total number of books ordered meets or exceeds a set minimum, your school's honorarium payment will be reduced. If a school is very interested in a visit, but does not feel able to pay an honorarium or meet the book minimum, please contact me directly (lydap@hotmail.com) so that we can talk about options.
Materials: After arranging a visit, I will send:
Two copies of a letter of understanding about the visit. Please sign and return one copy. To hold a spot for you on my calendar, I will need to receive the signed letter back within two weeks of sending it out.
